I have a 99 Carrera Cpe C2 Tiptronic. I plan on buying a used transmission and having it installed.

Can anyone tell me what years I could install a used one from without any major issues?

996 were manufactured from 98-05. I believe the transmission part number for a tiptronic

changed over the years but that may not tell me if a later version will or will not fit. at this point

in time I am focused on a used one from a 03. Please share any additional insight you might have

that would help during the exchange.

Any help / insight is greatly appreciated.

To start with, there are two different manufacturers: ZF and MB, yours should be a ZF. So you need the same brand Tiptronic, same type number (Carrera and Boxster are different given the 180° rotated installation of the powertrain) and same gear/transmission ratios. Tiptronic "S" or non "S" is not an issue, this only concerns a different control box and buttons. Hope it helps.

I would also ask if a transmission from a 986 would work ?

Only if you want five reverse gears and one foward. Boxster and 996 engines are reversed, the Boxster is ahead of the gear box, the 996 is behind it, so they are rotating in oposite directions.

RFM,

Thanks for responding. Just to confirm you don't see the "year" being an issue as long as I have the same manufacture?

If mine is a 1999 ZF and I buy and install a 2003 ZF I should be good to go? I am just confirming before I go spend $$$.

Thanks

Larry,

You have to buy a 1999-2001 ZF tiptronic from a 996.

Starting from 2002 - ALL 996s were fitted with the Mercedes AMG 722.6 transmission which is incompatible with your 2001 car.
