IMS on 2006 boxster

Hello,

Newbie here, read a lot about IMS problems. About to buy a 2006 Boxster Tiptronic (not an S)

vin is: WPOZZZ98ZGU7*****

I read somewhere that after MY 2006 the problem was either solved or lessened. However I do not know how to read the registration nor do I know if this is indeed the case. Having read so much about this problem, I am nervous - more so than my husband! so if you know anything, kindly reply.

I look forward to owning and driving a boxster and being part of this online community. The car was originally bought in Italy, now in France.

WP0ZZZ98Z6U7..... should already have the latest update, it would still help if you have the engine number as listed.

Ok, I'll ask for that tomorrow at Porsche. Many thanks for your reply and I'll post the engine number when I have it. Would it happen to be on the Carte Grise (registration) or will I only know when I have the actual car?

The engine number is stamped on the lower bloc (sump), this number is more intresting than the number on the registration, there they by lazyness rarely get updated. An OPC replace the engine and update the maintenance/waranty booklet but the registration is a task for the customer and there get it sometimes wrong.

Any M96/97 engine with the factory IMS is a some level of risk of failure. None of the three differnent designs Porsche tried are immune to failure. A 2006 engine would have the large diameter lfinal design which cannot be updated without taking the entire engine apart. 1997-2004 engines could be updated without taking the engine apart or even taking it out of the car. 2005 was a transitional year where it is impossible to tell which style IMS bearing is in the car without pulling the flywheel off and looking at the center bolt.
