what engine oil should I use for initial start up of a rebuilt boxtser engine? using original cam's,tappets, cylinders, pistons. New piston rings,IMS, chain guides.

You are going to want to run a very high ZDDP oil designed for new engine break in periods, like Joe Gibbs BR product. I would not run this for more than 400-500 miles.

I don't consider myself to be a guru, but this is what I do based on the recommendations of my engine building buddy.

dino 10w/40 -- my choice castrol GTX, but I'm not sure it matters exactly.

I run for about 20 minutes -- dump the oil

then dino 20w/50 for 500 miles -- dump that oil -- keep revs below 4k.

then good to go with synthetic of your choice.

Also don't lug the engine and when you have the opportunity use engine breaking

I'm sure others will chime in.

Now if it's a race engine -- or used just for the track -- we just rebuild it -- do the 20 minute dump

then run the ***** out of it on track -- but we know we're not going to get 100K more miles out of it

and putting along with a track only vehicle for 500 miles at 4K RPMs isn't going to work :-)

That and we dump the oil after each race weekend.

I just finished first break in oil, Joe Gibbs BR 30 (375miles). I hope to replace it today with conventional Castrol GTX 10w40 and GM additive EOS (more zinc). I'll run that for about 700 miles.

For this first stage I limited my upper revs to 5000. It was mainly highway miles but alot of gear shifting and some braking, always pushing the revs.. Average Rev's about 4000. Probably 30% of the miles were city.

Its a tough job "driving your car like you stole it", can't wait to do it again!

Any advice?

Time for a follow up for those who helped.

Sept 16 - As stated earlier after rebuild I started the breakin process with Joe Gibbs BR 30 (conventional oil).

Sept 20 - After 610km (385 miles) on JG BR 30 I changed oil to Castrol GTX 10W40 (conventional) with Delco EOS additive.

Pics of first 385 miles:

Oct 05 - with 1230km (765 miles) on Castrol GTX 10w40 and Delco EOS it was time for another oil change.

Nov 18,2013 - with 3367 km (2092 miles) on this batch of castrol GTX 10W40 and Delco EOS it was time for another oil change. This time if I used full synthetic Joe Gibbs DT 5W40. I went for a 20 min. ride and the car is garaged for the winter.
