Oil Level Check after refueling

2005 UK spec C2S manual. Has anyone got this to work? I follow the steps in the manual and it never works. I have tried locking the car when paying, leaving it open (with wife sat in it I hasten to add!) and it never tells me the oil level when I turn the key. Am I doing it wrong or is it like the drivers window auto close, it just doesn't work? :eek:

Turn the key to the accessary on position, which requires you to turn the key twice until all the system check lights appear in the center gauge. Vertical bar graph will show up in the center display, 5 seconds later it gives you a reading when engine is cold. When engine is hot The proceedure is the same but the countdown timer will show a longer time period before the reading is displayed.

The auto close function works. You need to reset the window position sensor by holding the window switch while the window goes all the way up, let go of the switch, then hold it again until the window goes all the way down. Do it for both switches.

In my car, as long as the car is fully warmed up, I just get in and turn the key to the run position and it automatically goes in to oil check mode. It this does not work, leave the key alone, do not start the car or you will reset the timer to 5 minutes. Scroll down through the menu with the small stalk on the left. Check your manual as I can't remember the exact routine and you should be able to trigger the oil check routine. If the oil is not fully warmed up to 215 F the routine will not run.

Thanks both for the replies. Done the window reset I don't know how many times. Sometimes it does work, usually not! Guess it 'might be' the switch. Passenger one works correctly. Usual scenario on the oil check. Always works on the key turn to run position, warning lights on etc and if hot takes 6 seconds or longer if not quite up to temperature/drained back but the handbook says it will display after filling with fuel and it doesn't. No matter what routine I follow. If, like yesterday, I fill with fuel and turn the key without foot on clutch to just bring on the ignition it says 6 minutes :o , don't think I will be popular sitting in a fuel station for 6 minutes holding up a queue just to check my oil ! :angry: :angry:

Oil level measurement during refuelling

The oil level is automatically measured during refuelling.

Preconditions

1. Ignition is switched off.

2. If the engine is at operating temperature, at

least 5 minutes must elapse between parking

the vehicle and starting the engine.

3. Refuelling completed within 15 minutes.

When the ignition is switched on, the engine oil level

is shown on the segment display.

Measurement will be stopped if the above requirements

are not met.

jl-c obviously your car does not like filling up. I suggest you check your oil when you come out of the supermarket. Don't forget to get the Wurst und saurkraut.

I have read that section before and didn't interpret it the way you have but now I'm curious. Have never bothered to check the oil after refueling because, as you say, it takes forever. But, reading the section again it suggests that getting an instant reading is possible within 15 minutes of a fill up of a fully warmed engine. II will try it next time I fill up and see what happens. My expectation is that I'll get the 6 minute countdown clock but we'll see. Will post my results here.

If your engine is fully warmed up when refilling, AND if you refill the whole tank (takes longer), it should only wait a few seconds to give you the oil level reading. I know because sometimes that's how I got the low oil level warning first.

In US cars the timer resets to 5 minutes. It seems everywhere else the timer resets to 6 minutes. My car does not care what you just did, fill up or supermarket as long as the car has sit with the engine off for 5 minutes and is fully warmed up just turn the key and you get the oil level.

My experience as well. No matter what or where, if the car is started with a fully warmed engine the timer counts down from 5 minutes (which is stated in the owners manual instructions as condition # 2).
