They keep falling out before I can get the pads in. Any tricks or tips?

Got it! Either the DIY is incorrect or I have a weird set up. The larger damper goes in the bottom and the smaller on top. This is opposite of the fronts and opposite of the DIY instructions.

Put a dab of high temp synthetic brake grease (couple bucks online or at any competent parts store) on the dampeners before you put them on the pads; don't go nuts here, just a dab. It will hold them in place while installing the pads and actually helps dampen noise as well.

Can the emergency brakes be adjusted with the wheels on - one bolt removed? I can't seem to get it right and I'm tired of removing the wheels and remounting them.

There are two adjustments for the 986 parking brake, one is under the center console, the other is inside the rear rotors, so the wheels have to come off. The correct adjustment procedure is to loose the cable turnbuckle under the console until the cables are just slack, then turn the star wheel in the rear rotor (you reach it through one of the lug openings in the rotor. You loosen the star wheels on both sides until the wheels turn freely (usually 8-9 notches), then raise the parking brake lever two clicks. Now tighten the turnbuckle under the console until the rear rotors can only be turned with difficulty on both sides (may require playing with one of the star wheel adjusters so both side match). Release the parking brake and make sure the rotors turn freely. If they do, put everything back together and go have a cold one........

For adjustment of the cables and turnbuckle, what do you remove to access them?

From my memory, you need to remove the coin holder (just slide up), then the rubber mat and the plastic base plate, all inside the armrest storge.

Thanks guys, I'll check it out tomorrow.

Btw, I found that the instructions for the rear dampers were incorrect, at least for my car. For the rears, the larger dampers go on the bottom and the smaller ones go on top. I finally got them in by peeling off the paper and sticking them to a wide flat screwdriver, then using the screwdriver to press them in.
