Auto noise - when stationary and in gear

Hey folks,

I recently aquired an auto 98' 996 911

Auto, Red, 81klms, Roof,

It is making a noise when its in gear and at a stop, slight eeerrrrrrrr

Not sure if it is engine or transmission?

If i put it in neutral or take off the noise goes away.

I know these cars have certain charecteristics but i was just after some owners thoughts,

You should likely put a diagnostic tool like Durametric, or a Porsche PST2, or Porsche PIWIS tester and see if you have fault codes.

Could be as simple as low transmission fluid - but the codes should tell.

In my case the noise only coccurred when I put the car into gear, D and R. Only on these occasions.

The dealer can't figure out what the problem, had its oil replaced 2.5 years, 10,000kms ago. No error code that was related to the noise.

Have you tried turning the AC off? Perhaps it has to do with the serpentine belt and the load on it? RPMs change a bit when in gear or neutral, same applies in the case of the AC, so I guess it's worth a try...

Nope, noise still there when A/C was off.

My dealer indicated that it is possibly the valve body or servos filling up.

Advise a trans service, although its fluid was replaced 3 years ago.

To revive this thread, especially no one still knows the reason, and I at last managed to remember to get the sound mentioned by OP.

 

To recap, on Tiptronic regardless whether it's the new or old gearbox.  Only happened when the gear lever was moved from N or P to R, or D.  Or the car's turned off and on P.

 

Only happened when the car was really warm, and after a spirited drive.  Never occurred after it's first started on the day, or when it's cooled down.  The cideo captured the noise on the following seconds : 3, 8, 14, 19, 23 and when it's tunred off at 31.  I put my phone on the ground just below the B-pillar, on the right side of the car.

I think the noise is caused by the on/off mouvement of the electric/vacuum operated cooling water shutoff valve, which controlled the transmission heat exchanger. The valve is mounted just in front of the gearbox, at the level of the B-pillar, above the plastic bottom protection.

That would be on the left side of the vehicle, which is the other side to where I put my phone for recording the noise.  Left and right is when looking at the vehicle from the back.

Yes, it is #8 in the diagram, the valve is in the middle of the vehicle at the end of the transmission.

Thanks for that, I'll give it a check if the car hasn't been to the garage this week.  I'll obviously let them know your suggestion and for them to confirm it.

 

Otherwise I'll take a look again on the weekend, as the car needs to be really warm before it starts making that noise.
