Is there a way to turn it on manually?

If you are trying to test it, the Durametric software or a PIWIS/PST II can activate it; otherwise Loren is correct, the DME will run the fan if and when needed.

I suppose you could test the sensor by giving it a blast with a hair drier or a heat gun on a low setting. I think the sender on my 996 is just below the plate for the catch that holds the engine cover.

My post above is wrong. So rather than correct it I thought I would admit to my error and avoid confusion. The sender is NOT where I thought it was(is). So I have to ask: Where is the temperature sender for the engine compartment cooling fan on a 996 C2 2003 model Tip?

Thanks for reading.

It should be held by a plastic clip in between the intake runners for cylinders 4 and 5.

It's here (circled in red) in the Turbo. I included two pics, one is zoomed out to show where in the engine compartment... the second is showing specifically what it looks like.

p.s. Sorry, noticed this is in the Carrera (non-Turbo) section of the site after I posted this (I was dealing with something related on a Turbo for the last week)...but this could still be informative for someone in the future nonetheless. Thanks

how do I replace mine?

is it screwed in?

If you are referring to the sensor, it is simply inserted into the rubber/plastic holder which is then pushed onto the ridges of the intake runners. No fasteners involved.
