Hello All,

Been ages since I used this forum last, nice to see a few of the old names. Had to re-setup my account though!

Thanks for having me back.

To keep a long story short, I am about to revisit my Boxster S that has sat there in the rain, snow, sun and wind for around 2 years due to an engine failure. I fetched the engine out shortly after, but due to circumstances, the engine has sat in the garage for all this time, and the car outside :(

So, due to a change in circumstances, I am now full steam ahead in revisiting this and getting it up and running again.

I believe the failure is the all too common IMS bearing (as the bearing seems to ‘wobble” in its casing mount (pretty sure that’s not right!!). The symptoms at the time were load knocking / screeching, and sometimes the engine would struggle and try to stall (like it was seizing up).

So I plan to buy the Pelican Parts IMS retro kit, get it fitted, engine back in, and have all fingers cross it will fire and sound its true self again. Then I’m dreading to find what else has seized while it’s been standing :(

My initial reason for posting this thread is to ask if anyone would recommend any further maintenance while the engine is out of the car. Such as popping cylinder heads off, cleaning the piston tops and cylinder chamber heads, etc??

Many thanks in advance for your help

Russ

First thing to look at is the inside of the oil sump cover and oil filter, if it is full of metal grit (common in IMS failures), you need to pull the engine apart (total rebuild), other wise the grit will promptly kill any new parts you install.

Hi, Yes, Unfortunately, a big end shell had gone (was nothing left!!), so a new crank is needed (as I dont think you can get under sized shells)
