Squence of events:

- CS parked overnight in garage

- started engine - normal

- open garage door

- put tranny in R

- backing up slowly into back alley

- as I was backing up I tried to turn the steering a bit, wheels pointing to the right

- felt the steering very heavy as if the power steering was not working

- when i was out of the garage and into the alley, I turn the wheel fully to the right

- at that point the power steering was normal

- then I proceded to turn the steering to the left to go down the alley, it was normal.

So was this brief absense of power steering normal in a CS at startup?

Power steering fluid was normal.

No puddles on the ground (yet).

Hard to say but if you have the speed sensitive steering it might have just been a sticky control valve in the rack. Nothing to worry about if it stays working.

There is a TSB: Servotronic Control Unit: Steering is Hard and Stiff After Starting the Engine 13/08 ENU 4869 4

The TSB is 2006 up to 2008. Not sure if your CS is a late '05 it may apply?

No jokes about the title please :)

Thanks for the replies...

Power steering fluid is about 1/3 the way up from Minimum and clear. I will look into the TSB. The description describes exactly what happened.
