Hi. I have an '03 996 Targa, and the sunshade recently came off track and broke. It appears that the little plastic clip inside the track that moves the shade back and forth broke, so I'll need to replace that with a new one (I already have the new part.)
Well, I brought the car into a dealer, and the guy told me that they'd have to remove the entire roof of the car to get to that little sunshade track, and it would cost thousands of dollars for the work. I got the vibe that he just didn't want to deal with it, but I'm not sure.
So, I was wondering if any Targa owners out there have dealt with this. I believe that the 993 sunshade track can be operated on if you simply remove the wind screen, but I'm not totally sure. Is the mechanic at the dealership pulling my chain? I could understand if we were talking thousands to repair the actual Targa top, but the sun shade? Sounds fishy. Thanks!

Yes, on 993's certain drive pieces are replaceable without roof removal.

I just check POSES and it seems on the 996 the first step for everything is removing the roof module. So this is quite possible

I only have experience with 993 targa repairs. Not sure if someone could manage to change the piece in the car.

And yes most techs run when ever someone mentions a targa roof problem.

Good luck.
