My '04 C4 has this option, but frankly I can't hear much of a difference if any when I engage the quiet down switch. I am getting old but I should think it would be noticable. Suggests / comment please.

The switch operates a solenoid that open/closes a vacuum to a valve on each muffler. If you hear no difference at all the lines leaking or not connected or perhaps a previous owner disabled the quiet mode.

You will need to do some further checking.

So it it must be in the closed position as I seems quiet to me, probably not a DYI project to determine if its ope or closed?

If it is always quiet both sides then the vacuum valves are working and chances are a previous owner revered the valve at the solenoid to keep it quiet or made some other mod.

If something had failed it would be loud all the time as that is the default on the sports exhaust.

All sport exhaust aren't set this way ... mine is quiet when desactivated and loud once button pushed and vaccum ON ;)

If you reverse the check valve the switch will work as you describe. But from the factory no vacuum equals loud. So if you were to just put the mufflers on the car with no electronics the exhaust is always loud (that is how it is on my car).

The default mode is "loud", and unless the previous owner bypassed the vacuum solenoid and connected the vacuum lines directly to the vacuum port on the intake to keep it quiet all the time, there is a chance that the original sport mufflers were removed and replaced with the standard mufflers. If you can, look at the mufflers under the car, and see if there is a valve attached to one of the pipes that comes out of the muffler body down to the exhaust tips.

I'm not talking about PSE but I have a SCART on mine (I just fitted it last week end) and I can assure you that :

- out of the car valve is closed

- in the car without any electrical wire plugged : valve is closed

- in the car with electrical plugged in and vaccum activated : valve is open

I has been bought brand new and this is the way SCART designed their system. Pretty clever as if the valves are encountering an issue => you ride in quiet mode ;)

For PSE (and most of the aftermarket sport exhaust) you are right valve are open when not activated ;)

Where exactly is the solenoid and vacuum hoses located when you look from under the car or do you see them from up top?

Just came back from from the Indi while I was there with a different concern. He explained to me there is a lever that once the solenoid is activated closes this lever, however he couldn't get it to move with his hand, which he thought he should be able to. He though maybe it is froze from unuse. Also he said that there is only one on the Rt side muffler. I would think there should be 2, one for each muffler?. Any ideas on this issue and if there is an easy way to loosen the lever (PB Blaster?) would be appreciated. Thx for any and all assistance.

I spoke with Rob at Pelican yesterday about my PSE issue. He said the levers should be movable by hand, and told me where the actuator was. Guess I'll start be seeing hearing if actuator makes any sound when the button is pushed. This was an expense option and I really would like to get it functioning. Car seems quiet, so I think it is stuck in the closed position. Any thoughts on cause and fix would be appreciated.

I just bought a 911 with PSE last week and it sounds AWESOME! Definitely worth the effort getting it working.

Update on my journey to get the PSE working. Spoke with someone who mentioned that he has heard that due to moisture in the mufflers that level can rust from the inside making it immoveable. Other than a PB plaster soaking and slight hammer taping from the outside anyone have any ideas on how to free it up?
