Hi. I'm new to the forum. A while back my door locks stopped working. There is no resistance when I turn the key in the door (the remote lock hasn't worked since I bought the car a couple years ago something I'll remember to check in the future before I leave the dealership.) in any case I started to research the issue and found some information about an inexpensive fix using the locking mechanism from a VW passat. Needless to say I'm ready to purchase this part and attempt to fix the problem but I can no longer locate that post (not sure where it was posted).

My question is if any of you guys are familiar with the issue and the resolution? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Just went through this, also on a 2001. I got the double-beep a few seconds after locking and then the car unlocked itself again. Sometimes this happened spontaneously (during driving or sitting in the garage). Beep-beep. Tore into both doors, ohmed out the connections, checked the module under the driver's seat (thinking it might have gotten wet at some point). Nothing. Still beep-beep.

Finally, I started disassembling the door lock modules (the part you think might work from the Passat).

These are fairly easy to take apart and put back together.

It turned out that one of the two spring operated clutch-bolts at the end of the DC motor that operates the latching mechanism was stuck. Something had gotten caught in there. A drop of oil after wiggling it free is all it took.

Car locks fine again.

It took some time to find -- and a trip to the dealer to get door panel clips, as the old ones were brittle.

Guy:

The symptoms you describe are consistent with a faulty door lock assembly.

Sometimes it's something mechanical, as "cmos" has described, other times it's the result of cracked solder connections to the door lock assembly.

If you do a search here, you will find instructions on how to take off the door panel. You can then remove the door lock assembly and inspect it. As "cmos" said, it's fairly easy to take apart that assembly and put it back together.

Your other option (once you have determined that the door lock assembly is faulty) is to replace the assembly, at a cost of about $200.

Be thankful you don't have a '97 as that same part is about $450.

Regards, Maurice.

There are several switches in the door lock assembly, including one which operates when you turn the key clockwise, and another when you turn it counter-clockwise. These signal the central locking to lock and unlock. If you are turning the key to the lock position and the central locking isn't activating, but the driver's door is locking, it might be the switch. However, if you turn it to the unlock position you should hear the lock motor unlocking.

If it is the central locking which isn't working at all (ie the lock motors don't work on the key, or by the switch on the dash) then it might be a blown fuse on the alarm control module itself. There is a small 15A fuse between the two connector plugs.

If you have no resistance on the key at all, it might be that the blade on the key barrel which engages in the door lock assembly has broken, or become dislocated.
