Thx JFP, she died at the stop light and won't start seems a lot like crank position sensor going out. What is the normal symptom for this? What do uguys think? I had a very similar experience with my Mercedes.

I experienced sudden death one day. I drove the dog to doggie day car. Pulled into the drop off zone, turned the engine off, dropped off the dog, and got back in the car to start it. The engined cranked and cranked, but would not start. Bad fuel pump was the cause. Replaced the pump and all has been well for 2 years now. The amazing thing to me was that there was no warning whatsoever.

Thx fellas, no code then again I wouldn't know cuz I can't get her to start. Bad fuel pump is a good possibility as some of uguys know I did ran outcome gas,,, will check the pump.

These fuel pumps do not like to be run dry as the fuel also cools the pump itself. As yours is a 2000 model, I would also run a fuel pressure test as running the pump dry tends to pick up any accumulated crud from the bottom of the tank and jam up the fuel filter (yours has an external filter under the car). You may just need a new filter. As Loren has already noted, you may also have a dead CPS, which would also turn off the fuel pump.

Next day morning, she started fine but on the way bringing her home (app 20 mins) died again on my driveway! And won't start,,, cool down for a couple hrs then starts fine. Possibly fuel pump gets hot quit working, but works OK when its cool? Plus there is only 2 gals of gas in there. I'm going to put some more gas see if pump runs longer. Thx guys

What you're describing is a classic fuel pump failure as JFP described. The pump is fuel cooled, when run low on fuel , the pump overheats and stops or puts out low pressure. When it cools down it can work again....for a while.

If the electrical system is toast it will cause this too.

I had a very similar problem when the car would heat up the primary engine wire couldn't handle the heat soak and would cause stalling at low rpm.

Check the main ground strap, primary wire from alternator to starter to jump point in engine, and the condition of the battery.

Thx JFP! Both oreilly, auto zone wants $250 for it,,, made by airtex?

But is it an OEM quality pump (VDO), or a Chinese knock off? We have changed out several short life aftermarket pumps that did not make the grade…………..

I'd do the CPS first -- way cheaper, probably an easier fix too. Seen this at least 3 times.

then if you still have problems -- you can check the fuel pump pressure.

Good point Mike, I had not noticed that the OP did not post fuel pressure and delivery data, so I would at least check that before doing anything. And if I found no fuel pressure during a check, I would bridge the terminals on the fuel pump relay to force the pump to run and check it again to be sure it is not something else like the relay or the CPS, which causes the DME to shut the fuel pump off when the crank position sensor dies

Good point Mike! U seen this at least 3 times?

When she did die 3times, it was all at a stop sign,,,she dies at an idle?

I've seen this many times with a bad CPS. I'm thinking, a bad fuel pump can kill the engine anytime even while driving?

How close is the CPS from my AOS? Possibility its been leaking some oil.

No guessing game here,,, like to be certain .

I will drive her until she dies again,,,then when not starting, I will measure the pump 12V input.

Should be pretty easy to diagnose then!
