I changed to a larger Interstate battery today - H-8. It is about 3 inches longer but will fit the 996 battery box ok. The problem is it does not appear to have a vent.

Is this a major problem or should I return it for a H-6 or H-7 with a vent?

The battery plate will accommodate 3 sizes of batteries as I recall - just move the plate to the proper holes.

I would go for a vented battery and connect it to the existing vent.

Did you ask for the vent adaptor? Interstate makes it pretty easy depending on the vent's position (left or right side). It will clip into the side of the battery, and then you attach the car's current vent tube.

The larger battery with higher cranking amps (CCA) is generally recommended for colder climates, Tips, or if you have a bigger amp. Mike Focke has a great website that includes battery replacement considerations and part numbers.

Good, Chuck. That's the way it works with the Interstate batteries I'm familiar with (I have a MTP-91 in the 993 Turbo). There is a vent hole on both sides of the Interstate, depending if your car vents on the left side or right side. Great battery.

I agree, but I noticed that the hole for the hold-down for the largest size (H8) doesn't have a thread underneath. So, how do you bolt down the hold-down plate at the passenger side of the battery? I was all set to buy a size H8 battery when I noticed this, so I just bought a size H7 instead (which strangely cost more than the H8).

So Chuck, how did you bolt the hold-down plate to the battery tray?

Oggie --- You can get a nut under the tray or do as I did -- just thread the box and use a short bolt. It worked and yes the H-8 was cheaper.

I did the same. A little extra weight was not a concern, so installed the largest battery that would fit. I used the last hole for the mount and as Chuck and fpb said, you can hold a nut under the tray from the end.

Sounds like a good solution. Unfortunately, when I was replacing my battery, I was a bit rushed (Hurricane Sandy was heading our way within a couple of days and I had a bunch of other things to do). Another solution would be to line up the correct nut in the unthreaded hole, and then apply epoxy to attach the nut to the bottom of the battery tray. Then, just bolt the hold-down plate to the nut using the original bolt. This way, you could remove the bolt as you normally would since the nut would stay in place under the battery tray.
