Was driving to work the other day, and it was raining and dark. Saw something in the road at the last minute that I couldn't avoid. Went over it, large thump, ouch. At work I looked and found the rear plastic under shield had been destroyed. Guess my question is, is this part vital, and if so, how hard is it to replace without a lift to put your car on. BTW 98 Boxster, Trip........

I'd replace it, if I were you. It's important for the proper aerodynamics for high speed driving, and there are specific cut-outs that direct air for cooling to specific places/parts.

Jim, sorry to hear about that... we have a 98 Boxster like you and I have replaced the center and rear section on our car. You can do it with just a jack but you have to work one side at a time and will need a helper to just hold the shielding up while you put the plastic nuts in place on one side. The parts are not that expensive and can easily be ordered. If you have a local Porsche dealership it might be best to pick them up from them as they are big and shipping them could be costly. Call SUNSET and ask beore you buy them about the shipping costs. The sheilding is important for all of the reasons mentioned in the prior posts dont neglect to replace them.
