My recent purchase of an '01 996 C2 with only 21,000 miles has been great fun and a lot of smiles. However, just recently after a 15 mile run I noticed a burnt rubber smell after I shut down and it puzzles me. The car runs beautifully and I have not exerienced any problems. Another question I have is; given the age of the car and low mileage, has it been the experience of others that perhaps the shock absorbers have lost their ability to rebound properly. I know the Porsche suspension is sports minded, however, my car seems to have virtually no rebound rate and the ride on anything other than a very smooth road leaves something to be desired. Would appreciate comments if you think they may be relevant. Thank you.

This is pretty common with new owners. Assuming the car is running great, as you stated, it's probably just some of the cosmoline buring off your new garage queen. Also, those big fat rear tires throw up a lot of road junk on the hot exhaust.

As for the suspension, look into a coilover system like PSS10's.

Pretty much any aftermarket "performance" suspension that you put on it will make the ride firmer. Are you sure the suspension is stock? If you have 18" tires you can soften the ride by switching to 17". The higher sidewall will be a little more compliant. Even with 18s tire brands differ in sidewall stiffness and ride harshness.

I had a burnt rubber smell that I couldn't figure out until the serpentine fan, alternator belt came off. The pulley tensioner bolt back out causing the serpentine belt to be out of alignment, finally the bolt came out far enough and threw the belt. Naturally you can't see anything unless the air filter is removed...
