I am having an issue with a brand new Boxster S with optional 20" wheel and PDK. When turning left or right (full lock) at low speeds the car hops significantly. Very similar to 4 wheel diff lock on dry pavement. I am wondering if this is expected due to the large OEM wheel options or a potential real mechanical issue. Any opinion suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance. Andrew

This issue has been discussed several times, this is a normal phenomenon with cold tires and lower outdoor temperatures. Once the front tires are warmed up, will reduce the scratching. Do a search in the 986/996/987/997 forums and you will undoubtedly find much more inf about this issue.

Normal? Cold tires? Really? I've never heard of anything other than 1) a limited-slip differential issue, or 2) too much/not enough Ackerman effect in the front suspension, causing something like this. What other whacky surprises does Porsche ownership have in store for me?

i had the same issue with my 981 with standard 18's. supposedly it's worse with the 987, btw. but the hop *does* go away, and the serivce tech confirmed that it's normal. as a guess, it's a combination of wheel camber, wide tire and possibly not-perfect-turn-angle on one tire causing the hopping. yes, it's royally annoying and somewhat frightening.

Somewhat frightening? You've got that right. My first encounter with this was taking my new Boxster with 20" wheels and PDK to the grocery store... When I went to back out of the parking place I had this happen and my first thought was "what did I just back over?".

I don't recall this ever happening on my 2006 Boxster S with 19" wheels and manual transmission.

Nearly all the big tires and wheels will do this, especially when cold.  It's not a high hop, just should feel like some jerkiness, or letting go / catching.

 

It will do it if you go into a corner too fast, too.  Called understeer.

 

Find a physics guy to explain the theory.  Worse with bigger wheel / tire, but, don't we like how they look?
