On a '98 996 the Tip shifter and selector button are locked when key is off, but once I turn the key, the Tip button is unlocked and I can shift out of Park. But this is without pressing the brake! So there is no safety anymore!

I've replaced the brake switch and the Tiptronic shift lock solenoid at the base of the shifter box, and it's still the same.

Any suggestions where to check next?

It the magnet missing in the shift mechanism?

The magnet is still there. Anyhow, I was also thinking that if it were missing, the shifter wouldn't be able to lock with the key off?

Does anyone know if the shiftlock mechanism control circuit runs out of the Tiptronic control module, ABS module, or some other mmodule on the 996?

Looking at the wiring diagrams, I found that the signal from the brake switch is fed to the Tip CU, and the Shiftlock solenoid should then be activated. I will be checking these signals on the wiring and will update everyone. Meanwhile, if anyone has more info or has something to suggest, do chime in. Thanks!

Just to let everybody know that this issue has been solved. Turned out to be a wiring issue.

Any details on the wiring problem? It may be of help to others in the future.
