Ive searched many places but cant seem to find info on changing the fuel filter myself. Is this really necessary on a 2000 Boxster S with 48,000 miles? Any tips or pics would be helpful!

There has been info and pictures here on how to do it. It is a large filter and Porsche says 60,000 miles so you might wait a while. Porsche eliminated this filter in 2002.

Yes, it is in the fuel tank and normally does need changing unless the fuel tank become contaminated.

And speaking of fuel filters....

As I said a few years ago it is large. Largest fuel filter I have ever replace on any vehicle. My 1997 Boxster filter with 67,000 miles on it was finally replaced only because the Box was on a lift for a clutch replacement.

I cut the Box filter open and there was no junk inside it.

Then I cut open the tiny white plastic filter at the bottom which came from my 1988 Toyota pickup with 151,000 miles on the filter. Nothing in it either.

I know someone who owns a modern gas station. The underground tank has a filter. The pump has a filter. So the fuel has to go through 2 filters before it ever gets inside your fuel tank.

The reason Porsche removed the requirement to replace the fuel filter is that they changed to a returnless fuel system so less fuel is going through the filter.

Porsche return less fuel system is not so return less as you think, the return is build in the pump unit, just after the filter. The filter have the same quantity of fuel to make clean as the earlier versions, indirect fuel systems have need on a return, the fuel pressure is controlled by the return system and not by the supply.
