So the other day I got a 1531 code with no CEL which got me thinking that I didn't really feel the Variocam kick in the butt anymore. The Durametric is telling me that the cam values arent changing when the engine revs however I am able to activate both banks with the Durametric manually.

Not sure what the next step is. Any ideas?

You're just thinking that the variocam is not working? Drive the car over 5000 rpm and check... next step could be to clean and check the MAF sensor.

1531 can be a number of things...

variocam solenoid on bank 1 is bad.

wiring.

or DME.

Spend some time with search 1531 is covered very well here.

The fact that you can actuate variocam manually leads me to believe your DME might be faulty.
