I have a 2004 TT Cab with 29K miles on it. The motor has been noisey since I have owned it (since 14K miles), but the noise has gotten more noticabale as of late. I have heard a utube video of a 2006 TT making the same noise, and it was said it is likely the intermediate shaft but that it should not be a problem in a 2006 model year (corrected that year). I am attaching an MP3 file that I recorded today with my phone. It is not too great, but I think gets the point across. Halfway through the recording you can hear me close the engine cover. Please let me know your opinions.

Thanks

?

2006 would be a a 997TT.

Or is it 2004 996TT as the title says.

Either way start by ruling out the pulleys, alternator and AC compressor as well as the water pump.

Aren't both 996tt and gen 1 997tt the mezger lump and hence no ims?

No. All the 996 and 997 Turbos still have the short intermediate shaft for cam timing. The intermediate shaft on the turbo cars is held in bearing shells internally so there is no external seal to worry about.

Sorry...it is indeed a 2004 as in the title. I have edited the post. I can rule out the AC comptessor as it happens with the AC off, but will check the others. Does it sound funy to you or do others sound like this as well (other well running 996 TTs, that is)?

Well, it does not sound at all like my MY02. Considering the apparently clanking noise I would consider an

valve.

Pretty normal. Some have it worse than others. It's the backlash between the IMS gear and the crank gear. As long as the noise disappers above 1800 RPMs you are good.

Check out this video

The guy tore into his engine to see what needed to be replaced. Turns out everything looked ok. He put in a new IMS that was had a little less backlash, but after a few thousand miles the sound slowly started coming back.

My 997 Turbo makes all kinds of racket...All the Mezger engines do.. I wouldn't be too concerned about it.... If you running 0-40w oil try (your choice) of 5-40w (Porsche approved of course) Synth oil on your next oil change. It quiets the engine noticeably...

or 5w-50 also P approved.

Haven't tried that Wross but maybe next time I will!

It has worked quite nicely for me....since the last oil change I have not added ANY oil (over a year).
