Firstly, as a newbie, I’d like to thank all the people that have contributed to this forum as I have learned a great deal from them and put quite a bit of the advice to use.

I have read a number of posts in regard to the alarm and central locking on the 996 so I am aware of flat batteries, sleep mode etc.

My problem is quite odd – the remote, alarm and central locking were all working fine until I disconnected the car battery in order to remove the alternator and check the vacuum lines. After completing this maintenance the remote did not work. I did notice that when I disconnected the battery I got only one short beep from the siren.

The fault manifests itself in that the remotes do not perform the function at all – I have replaced the battery in the remote and the led flash frequency looks okay. No errors are shown by the Durametric software. With the key the central locking works and the alarm sets – when you get in the car with the key the alarms sound until you put the key in the ignition. Thus everything else seems to be working normally. In fact it would seem that the car is in permanent sleep mode now.

At the moment I have disconnected the siren and horn so that I have only flashing hazard lights when I re enter with the key. In fact I would like to disable both of these permanently without it throwing an error code.

Any solutions or suggestions, apart from take it to the dealer, greatly appreciated

Are thie interior lights working as normal (dimming, etc). If not, it might have slipped into transit mode, but I'm not sure if this would affect the remote operation.

If you disconnect the tilt sensor and siren, you should get the alarm coded to exclude these devices. You need a PST2 or PIWIS tester for this. If you are ever up my way I'd be happy to do that for you.

Thanks very much for your swift reply and generous offer. Actually I'm just down the road from you in Hook.

Yes the interior lights dim normally. Yes with the siren and the tilt sensor disconnected I get the alarm codes in Durametrics.

I have looked at the circuit diagram as the radio receiver must be on all the time and I was wondering if there is another in line fuse just for that device. I'm kind of clutching at straws here.

Thanks again- you are quite right there is a fuse in the module but unfortunately for me it is sound. I would like to pop over and will PM you to arrange a suitable time.

By the way if anyone else needs to check this fuse or get the module out don't take the seat out as I did just use a short screw driver to turn the screw at the front half a turn, lift up the front and slide out.

Hi Richard I have a problem with my M534 alarm unit under the seat, I opened a post some time ago about this

After so many tests I ended up thinking that the problem is inside the alarm unit, do you know how can I fix it? I know that I can't just swap my unit with another because it has to be coded...

I don't have any idea how a faulty alarm module could be fixed. If you are sure that the module is faulty, I think you are going to have to bite the bullet and buy a new one. If you have a PIWIS, and can get the IPAS codes from your local Porsche dealer, it is easy enough to program the new unit yourself. You just need to read out the keys and settings from the old unit, and write them to the new one. It is explained in the workshop manual.
