PST2 HDD replacement / Cloning

THe HDD in my PST2 is getting tired. Its eight years old and I'm concerned that if it fails I have a big problem.

I have cloned the original Bosch drive using two different software packages but get the same result both times with the cloned disk, machine boots up, beeps twice and then i get the car with the spinning wheels. Nothing beyond that.

I read on another thread that PST2 HDD's are very difficult to clone, is it possible to do this? When i did a chkdsk on the original drive there were a two file errors - the thing still seems to work OK but i'm now paranoid that its going to fail soon!

I had a similar experience on my very old PST2.

I ended up making a image of the old drive using Acronis and they copying that image to a new drive using the same program.

I cam make you a HD that runs PST2 for the IBM 600E ( you use your same card and cables) and it usally works on the PST2 unit too. If you need the IBM 600E you should be able to find a good one on Ebay for about $60. The problem is now getting the drives as the old laptops or windows 3.11 are not programed to function with 300 gig drives. A good source I have used is http://www.driveguys...HTJOD187&Cc=IDE if you can find "new old stock" or reconditioned or such 2.5 PATA drive and it should be atleast 6 gigs or more. I know the PST2 has a much smaller HD but the cloning or program install process seems to have a better success rate with a little more room.

I just bought a 600E with a 10 gig drive for $50 and a new battery for $35 and it works perfectly.

Actually the IBM runs faster that the PST2, displays in color, and is reparable and replacable as opposd to the PST2 unit. The only advantage of the PST2 over the IBM is that the PST2 will draw power through the cable from the car to run if the unit battery is dead while the IBM will not.

I found this site that has says its 10 20 and 30 gig HDs are new..

If you are getting the pauses or inconsistent behavior from the cloned drive, chances are the drive parameters are not set properly in the BIOS.

You can actually use any size IDE drive (which are still hard to come by), as long as you properly set the LBA, SPT, CYL, HEADS, etc. for the new drive in the BIOS... did that a few times with my KTS500.
