Hi,

Driving my 2000my 996 c4 the other day. a couple miles after starting when the car was still warming up it just cutout. tried to restart and it just cranked over and would not fire. After a few minutes it started fine and I drove off. A few miles later exactly the same thing happened...

I put my vag obd2 reader on and no codes were displayed. after reading the forums it looked like the crank sensor was the likely culprit so i have just bought a new one and replaced today. Started the car up in the garage and about 3 or 4 minutes of idling during warm up it cutout just the same. after a few minutes it starts fine again.

So what next??

I also read that the cam sensor may be the issue. I have located them and they look very difficult to remove and replace. When investigating more on the left bank one is conected to any wires. the r/h side one is in place but not connected to anything? Firstly is this correct? I guess so as I can not find any loose connectors that may have come off.

If so I was going to see if I can swap the two over rather than buying a new one. Looks like the AOS will need to be removed though for the l/h one.

Any other thoughts on what it could be.

I am trying to source a durametric kit at the moment as maybe my obd2 is not seeing all the codes.

Just swapped the cam sensors over from left to right and still does the same thing; cut out during warm up...

Not sure what to try next????

Check your fuel pump for pressure and delivery rates, also look at the fuel pump relay.

ok thanks. just swapped the dme and the fuel pump relay with others.

Be sure test the pump pressure and delivery as well, sometimes these pumps start locking up when they age, shutting off the fuel supply intermittently.

Hi,

I am not sure how to do that, or have the equipment to measure. Its on my list "to do" though, if these easy things dont fix it

thanks for your help

Fuel pressure and delivery is done by connecting a pressure gauge with a side flow port to the test port on the fuel rail (looks a lot like a brass capped tire valve). If the fuel pump is bad, the pressure will not be consistent, or in the correct range. Entire process takes about 15 min. to do.

Just make sure you have the right tool for the job.

Actron or Harbor Freight have the right kit, spend a littlte time with the search.
