With all of your help and DIY tutorials I set out to flush my brakes on a 2001 996. Ordered new fluid, a Motive bleeder and other misc accessories and set to work. After putting the car and 4 jackstands and removing wheels I removed the cap and then tried to remove the filter. After a few tries with a needle nose pliers I ripped the filter but was able to remove it.

The flush was easy and quick - amazing how dirty the fluid was after only 5k miles and 2 years! Finished up and on to the next project - thinking it would be easy to get another filter.

Of course - this being a Porsche you can only get the whole assembly - not just the filter! The dealer was eager to sell me the whole unit.

Any ideas how I can just get a new filter only?

Auto wrecker is your only choice I think. I just leave the strainer in place and a fluid extractor to remove as much of the old debris/fluid before hand.

I wasn't aware you could remove the filter, so I've always just sucked it out as well.

You can even fit one of the smaller syphon tubes into the side of the filter so it extends into the reservior, without removing the filter.

+1 on going with a wrecker.
