Color Match for 19" Carrera Classics

Hi All,

Just grabbed my first P-car, 2008 C2S with arctic silver and cocoa full leader interior. It's quite gorgeous and with only 6,700 miles and still under CPO till 5/14, I'm really excited. It's one blemish, however, is some curb burn on the right rear wheel. It has the 19" Carrera Classics. It's problematic since the car looks brand new otherwise.... I live in Salem, MA and have called around some of the local indies that service P-cars, but folks haven't had great success with matching the color. They think the folks that refinish them do a great job, just not with getting the color exactly right. I don't need all the wheels done, and at $270 a pop to refinish, it's really not worth it. I've looked at buying a replacement rim, but that's just as cost prohibitive. So, I'm curious if you all have any suggestions on how to replicate the finish to factory color. I'm not even sure what color that is, or if that paint could be ordered... Any help is much appreciated.

congrats Salem. my advice? drive it for a year and dont worry about the wheel. put a couple bucks away each month, enjoy the car, and have the wheel in question brought up to snuff. i feel you pain. owned my car for 2 months and kissed a curb ugh.

The paint that matched really well is getting hard to find here in the US.

Wurth Silver followed by Wurth Clear worked best.

Thanks guys, that's helpful. The indy I'm going to have service it basically gave me the same advice, i.e. drive it for a year or so and see if you do any more damage.... Besides, I've got to replace the tires and get a oil change and break fluid flush. Thinking if I spend anymore my wife will kill me...

I'm not much of a DIY guy, but it's worth looking for Wurth, when I need to have it done.

I've read that "GT Silver" matches the 19" Carrera Classics. I bought some on ebay, but I haven't tried it yet. If you're interested, look for "Porsche 911 Carrera M7Z GT Silver Metallic Professional Touch Up Paint Kit".

That is interesting. I have a mobile wheel guy who has worked on all my Porshe wheel scuffs. When I had my 997 Carrera he had no problem matching the silver on the 5 spoke rims. He's not exactly a "factory trained technician" either... Maybe it's because I'm in L.A. and there are so many mobile wheel refinishers.... I guess they know what paint to use.

I'm from L.A. too, it's a differnt culture out here when it comes to cars. (I hope I don't get flamed for this but...) Few cars out here have nice rims. Might be due to the pot holes from the cold weather... So this is problem is probably a derivative of that... Frankly most people treat their cars like $hit out here. They bang car doors into the cars next to them in parking lots and things like this. I'm like Vincent in Pulp Fiction when it comes to never @#%&ing with a man's car, so it irkes me out...

I'll just enjoy the car for awhile and perhaps refinish them all at some point or upgarde and keep these for some other purpose.

While I don't have curb rash, i have noticed that my 19" wheels have some dings on them as if it is almost from road pebbles. I might want to repaint them the "original" silver at some point. Two of my Classics have some rash... I'm considering black powder coat. Cost the same as fixing(color matching) two wheels.

I'd love to do mine in black, but my interior is in Cocoa, I just don't think that would mix right... Still love the interior though.

Remember if you want the wheels completely repainted you will have to take them off the car and remove the tires. Wheel places usually charge quite a bit for this.. (as much as $200 per wheel.)

This guy just does touch ups... Also if you have him do touch ups DO NOT drive your car for at least 24 hours (If the weather is warm.. If cold 48 hours.) If you dont let the paint dry completely brake dust and dirt will get on it and ruin the finsh.. (ask me how I know..)

wait till you need some new rubber, and till your "know" where the corners are ;-) here is a pic of my wheels. the car is arctic silver with black/terracotta interior. i think they are seal grey or current equivalent. have some rash on em but gonna wait till the tires are done.

Depending on how badly "scratched" you could experiment with a piece of "wet of dry" sandpaper or a very fine file and smooth the roughness then with a small cheapie paint brush and some silver spray cans....various colors, try to match the color by spraying the paint into the cover of the spray can and gently applying it over the area you "fixed". It will make it almost disappear, at least until you change the tires and have them permanently painted.

I ahve done this on various BMW and Porsche wheels...it just makes the damage less obvious...
