I don't use my 996 as a daily driver, in fact it may be in the garage for a month before is driven. It is a 996 1999, C2, manual.

After a month, or even more, in the garage it starts right away (trickel charger), after driving the car for several miles and paking it, when I try to strat it, it won't start. It is like low voltage, however, the meter shows 13 volts. I wait several minutes, and after a couple of tries, it does start. Any ideas, starter issue, grounding issues?

Hello,

Yes there could be a large number of reasons, but these are the most common.

I would start by removing and having the battery tested at an auto parts store (free).

Then I would remove and have the alternator and starter tested at an auto parts store (free).

If those things do not resolve the problem, likely candidates are either the ground strap from the body to engine <AND/OR> the positive battery cable that runs from the alternator to the starter to the positive jump point in the engine bay (which are both susceptible to corrosion).

If you spend a little time with search all of these issues are well documented.

Good luck! Keep us posted.

After reading several posts here and on Rennlist decided to replace the gound cable for the starter and the cable from the alternator to starter. Cheaper that a starter. Just ordered them from Sunset Porsche. Sunset has to order the items (4 days).

Will update.

I seem to be struggling with similar issue... what was the resolution for your issue here? Thanks in advance!

I'm relatively new here and had a similar issue. Wife got me a 06 C4 almost a year ago. Car never cranked very strong. Came back from a month at sea and battery was about dead. Charged it, car started fine. Drove 45 minutes to work and car wouldn't crank at the end of the day. Serviced the battery, started using a trickle charger and still got stranded again. Bought a new battery and wow does it crank strong now. I guess the original 6 year old Moss battery finally stopped taking a charge.

I had the same issue, cold crank start up worked fine, when the engine got warmed up sometimes it would take many many attempts to get restarted. Checked and cleaned all the connections, grounds, everything. In the end, replaced the starter and that fixed it. Same car as yours so you might think about replacing the starter. I am a DIY...not that difficult if you have the patience. Got the Bosch starter PN R99660410300 from AutoAtlanta Porsche for $270.
