Is the stock OEM muffler on a 2000 Boxster (base) and Boxster S the same muffler? If not, what are the differences...? I'm looking at alterntive ways to get the sport sound without spending the 4 grand on a Fabspeed system....

Was also wondering if 911 OEM headers (MY2000) are a direct bolt on fit on the Boxster...?

Thank you.

There is very little difference in sound output between the base 2000 muffler and the S unit; the only real difference is the tips. You would be better off looking for a used PSE, which has a better note without the drone of aftermarket stuff.

As for using 911 headers on a Boxster, unless you have a lot of time on your hands, and a good MIG/TIG welder, I would suggest against it. The engine in a 911 is facing the other way around (the engine is behind the gearbox in a 911 rather than in front of it as it is in a Boxster), so one Hell of alot of fabrication would be required to get this working.

On our 98 BASE 986 my wife's Uncle had the stock muffler taken off and sent to a local muffler specialist and they cut the top off gutted it and rewelded the top back on, not entirely 'elegant' but once reinstalled you cant see it and it sounds very nice....low growl noise at idle 'spirited volume' under accl... the only down side is the tell tale drone at about 2.7k to 3k once past those rpm's it sounds great...of course with the top down who cares... let's just say you now hear our Boxster before you see it :) our local dealer's service scheduler just shakes his head but have on the downlow the mechs told me they love the unique sound it makes.

Well it looks like I can buy an OEM muffler off of a 2000 Boxster S, for only a $100. So I'm going to try the "gut the muffler" option mentioned above. Are there any mounting issues I should be aware of when using the Boxster S muffler on my Boxster Base...?

Thanks.
