Anybody knows where are the relays for the radiator fans?

Hi!

I'm trying to trouble shoot a driver's side radiator fan not working and I want to check fuses or relays before embarking into replacing the fan... Anybody knows the location of the radiator fan's relays and or fuses?

Car is a 2005 Carrera, manual transmission...

No cooling fan relays in 997-1.

There is a control unit for the fans and a relay in the right front luggage compartment. 80A fuse for both fans - so if one working and one is not then the fuse is fine.

so, most likely it's a connector to the fan issue or the whole fan needs to be changed...

I would put Durametric, PST2 or PIWIS tester on it before I started replacing large parts.

Just as likely (IMHO) a control box issue. But check the connectors first.

I've done many upon many cooling fan resistors and complete fan assemblies on 996's so I imagine the 997 is similar. The resistors clip near the bottom of the fans in front of the wheel wells.

You could test the fan motor directly by applying 12 volts positive at the fan wire connector junction point (remove wheel well liner to access).

No resistors on 997-1. The fans are controlled by electronics with their own control box.

From the Tech Book for the 997-1...

"An infinite fan control for the radiators has been introduced with the 3.6 litre and 3.8 litre engines of the new 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S. This new feature permits infinite control of the fan speed as a function of the coolant temperature and the system pressure in the air conditioning system instead of two-stage control. It has the advantage of requiring less current and therefore creates less of a load on the

vehicle electrical system.

With staged control, when a temperature threshold was exceeded the next fan speed had to cover all of the allocated temperature range. With infinite control, the fan speed can be continuously adjusted to the actual requirement. This means that the fan speeds can often be reduced, thereby decreasing noise and vibrations."

Loren, is the fan control unit on the driver's side or passenger side of the front luggage area? I never know what right or left means when talking about cars! :)

Yes, right is as you sit in the car - so on US/Canada cars that would be passenger side.

My fan control unit went bad recently, causing the left hand fan to stop working. On my Cayman it was located behind the fan unit, on the right hand side. It was easy to accress it by removing the wheel and wheel arch liner.

Mine is a right hand drive car, so it is the driver's side for me!

It is close up to the side of the luggage compartment, right behind the fan unit, and from the diagram in the workshop manual it would be easy to mistake it for being inside. Just take off the wheel arch liner and you can't miss it, as you can easily see where the fans connect.

I wasn't sure if it was the fan or control unit, so (as someone has already suggested) I put a 12v supply direct to the fan, and it ran, so I knew it must be the control unit.

Or unplug the fan and stick a volt meter in the socket.

I am not sure that will work - I think these are stepper motors now and they get a square wave as I recall.

I suppose you have tried to turn the fan by hand. I had the driver's side fan out and it was simply a piece of gravel binding it. Hope your problem turns out to be that simple too.

UPDATE: Well, it seems the problem was that simple. I removed the wheel and wheel liner and once I touch the fan, it was stuck somehow. moved it a little and it came loose. Now it works perfectly. good to check before ordering parts! thanks all!

Thanks to this thread I too solved my right side fan issue. Just some gravel stuck in the fan. Works fine now. Sure pays to participate....cheers to all.
