It only does it for the first start up of the day. I'm not sure if it because of the cold weather, but it is pretty loud. After the car is warm up, it no longer makes the noise. Anyone have any ideas what this might be? Thanks.

Check your power steering fluid. A howling or screeching at startup with the ambient temp at 50F or below is a symptom of low PS fluid in the tank.

if it's a low pitch whine from engine that's normal for around 1min after cold start esp. first thing in morning or when ambient temp is low

Did this ever get resolved? My car started to do this. 1 second of screeching just as the car starts up from cold (usually overnight). Sound appears to be coming from behind the driver position. Car is USA, 2000 Boxster (not 'S'), 41K miles, manual.

Sorry I didn't conclude my post. Yes, it was resolved. It turned out to be the starter. I left the car overnight so the tech could start the car early in the morning with a cold start in order to produce the sound.

Thanks! That makes sense - maybe the starter drive was not disengaging? Did you need it replacing or just maintenance (lube?).

how much did it cost? i'm getting the same screetching noise on cold starts.. it's like after it starts, 2 seconds later, lasts for about 2 seconds.. then goes away..

if i don't take care of this by replacing the starter, will this damage my car?
