2008 Cayenne: Grill on left wall of trunk space

Here's a question for fellow Cayenne owners. I noticed that there are three different kinds of finishes on the left wall of the trunk space by the rear wheel well.

1) A plastic grill on the lower part by floor.

2) A pull away lid with nothing inside the wheel well.

3) A plastic catch-all bucket a la mini-van.

Does anyone know what's behind the grill of the first version?

The differences depend on the car options, pull away lid/standard, grill/rear AC unit, etc.

Thanks RFM, I see. The evaporator and heat exchanger is right above the left rear wheel. I'm guessing those two things need air-flow. That means I shouldn't permanently cover up the grill with anything - like a subwoofer enclosure.
