Reading through some of the posts relating to tire pressure it seems that the general consensus is that:

1. 996s are set up with a bit of understeer for safety reasons

and

2. that this can be mitigated somewhat by adjusting the pressures on the front and rear tires

If this is correct can someone explain to me which direction one should go to obtain various results?

In general you add pressure to increase grip. Of course this only works to a certain point. Starting with stock pressures you would increase pressure in the front and decrease pressure in the rear. Do not go overboard with this, 2-3 lbs change is about the limit. Generally you still want to run more air in the rear than the front.

Thanks. Just to restate to make sure I understand. If I wanted a bit more oversteer I could acheive this by lowering the pressure a few pounds on the rear. Yes?

Yes, but (IMHO) keep the proportion the same. In a Carrera with all that weight in the rear you want to keep the rears 4 psi higher than the fronts. So if you were to lower the rears to say 36 psi then the fronts should be 32 psi.
