I'm looking to upgrade from a 98 Boxster to a 2000 996. MOst of the cars I'm looking at from different Dealers have around 30K for mileage. What is cost of the 30K service? Also, anything I should worry about? One Dealer wants 2K for extended warranty. Is this worth it? I haven't purchased it with any other vechicle. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Considering all the oil leak issues it might be prudent to go for the extended warr. if you have the cash to spare.

30 K service is anywhere from $700-900. Get a "head to toe" pre-purchase inspection from a reputable dealer (if you can find one) or a solid independent. It should cost you around $300.00 for the pre-purchase inspection and it should give you a good snapshot of the state of your car.

2K for extended warranty is a bit high. More like 1500-1700.00. For every person you ask if the extended warranty is worth it there will be egual numbers that say it isn't. So, whatever blows air up your skirt...go for it...

Get the warranty, you'll recover it easily. dealer should do the 30k svc for you since it'll cost them little. It's worth about $700. Warranty (make sure it's certified from Porsche, not 3rd party) is worth $2k.

You can also do most of it yourself using the DIY section here on the site. None of it is very hard and you'll save quite a bit of money. The major items are: oil change, new airfilter and new plugs.

Thanks for the input. I found one and after having it inspected, it has a RMS. The Lexus dealer will take care of it. Otherwise it is perfect according to the shop I will have work on it. 34K on it and it has had the 30K done. I talked to previous owner who told me about the posible RMS issue.

Make sure the RMS is fixed by a reputable dealer and you get a 1-2 yr warranty on the RMS repair. Sometimes oil leak come from seals on the side of the engine and not just RMS alone. This require removal of engine.
