Hi Loren

The wiper is integral to the rear window glass lid and locates with a spring-loaded spiggot into the motor mechanism which is as you mention in the panel under the window.

The trick I'm trying to do is remove the wiper from the glass window. I cannot fin any manuals on the net that show the targa rear windown and wiper mechanism.

Cheers

Rear wiper - Targa only

post-1-0-44713000-1324908564_thumb.png

1. Holdrear cover at the side underneath and carefully pull out of the clips in the (direction of arrow).

2. Mark rubber stops (arrow) position and unscrew. Unscrew the fourfasteningscrews and removecover in (direction of arrow).

3. Unscrew both fastening screws 1 and push control unit first in direction A, then in B and set it down.

4. Unscrew three fastening screws 2 and remove the washers between the holder and the wiper motor (note number).

5. Relay 3 is positioned below the wiper motor holder. Push relay in (direction of arrow) away from holder.

6. The plug 4 for the wiper motoris positioned behind the holder for the wiper motor. Pull plug connection apart and remove wiper motor with wiring harness.

Install is the reverse - do not overtighten the screws 3-4 ftlb. only (which not very much).

Thanks Loren but this is motor removal, not the wiper mechanism from the glass lid (unique to the targa).

I've heard from another forum website that it cannot be removed - i.e. the whole rear glass window needs replacing - which seems totally bonkers to me.

I'll just keep on squirting the WD40 on it and hope it doesn't sieze for good. If you have any further info that you come across i'd be interested.

Cheers

Hi Blackice996,

did you find a solution for this? I have the same problem. My rear wiper is so stiff that the wiper motor can't move it any more. I removed the circlip and anything else that could be holding the wiper arm shaft in, soaked it in WD40 but it won't budge. Of course I didn't try brute force yet ;-) . I don't want to bread the window glas. If you have any suggestions I would very much like to hear them.

Thanks.

Hi all I have just had the same problem. The shaft on the 996 Targa is a snug fit in the housing and easily seizes. Mine was mostly dirt and a tiny bit of rust but it was seized solid.

Being frightened off by the thought of a new rear screen I decide well if it goes together it must come apart and found It is possible to take it apart.

Remove the wiper arm and blade.

Remove the exterior dust cover from the top of the spindle (996 562 453 00)

Clean the top of the spindle and you will see a half clip which sits in a groove to hold the spindle in.

Using a small screwdriver remove it don't loose it.

Remove the washer underneath it.

Soak the spindle from both sides in penetrating oil and leave.

You then need to find a narrow jawed 20mm spanner or grind an old one down to fit.

From the inside you will see the pivot arm that is attached to the spindle shaft.

Using the spanner gently rotate it backwards and forwards until you progressively get more and more movement all be it tight.

Gently work it back and forward whilst exerting pressure on the spindle and it will slowly come out.

Watch out for the two wavy washers at the bottom of the shaft.

Once out clean up with fine wet and dry sandpaper clean the sleeve through the glass and reassemble with plenty of anti seize grease.

Reassemble and you should be back in business.

Hope that helps.

Hi daxcobra - thanks for your tip, I've just taken out the rear wiper spindle on my Targa.

After following your removal procedure and then much wiggling using a pair of mole grips and GENTLY tapping the top of the spindle ( protecting the thread with a nut ) and squirting WD40 all over the place the spindle came out !!.....it took over half an hour to do this but it came out in the end

The rear wiper is now working perfectly - cheers !!

Hi,

Mines so tight that the spanner method would not move it, so, I tried to use the extra leverage of the wiper arm.... Big mistake, it has snapped off, thus, some solutions

1. Bury head in sand...

2. Buy secondhand rear targe screen

3. Measure up length of shaft, drill out, then get new shaft made.

Hmmm, solution 3 it is then.

I will wait for the weather to warm up slightly though first.
