1999 C4 996 manual transmission. During the past month, when I first start up the car and I am backing out, the car will stall. I then try to start the car and nothing. Will not crank. I will have to try to start it about 4-5 times and then it will start and works normal for about a week and the same thing happens again. The only other change I have noticed is a mildly rough idle when the car is cold. No warning lights. Any suggestions?

I would change out the ignition switch first as they can cause odd issues like this. As for the rough cold idle start by cleaning the throttle body and idle speed motor if your model year has one.

Ditto, also check the condition of the battery, charging, and starting system. In addition the condition of the large positive lead coming from the alternator to starter to jumper point in the engine bay.

Thanks for the advice. Excuse my ignorance, but where is the idle speed motor and how do I clean it?

Your MY1999 C4 is eGas so there is no idle control solenoid. Just give the throttle body and butterfly a good cleaning.
