My 2000 Boxster is due it's 60,000 mile service. The dealer is asking $700.00 to do this service and said it requires replacement of the crankshaft poly-rib belt. Is there a place where I can find details on what is required for each service interval? Also, has anyone performed this task? If so how hard is it?

The local group has replaced a few 986/996 belts at 60k and they were all fine.

The thing you do want to check is the condition of the bearings of all the pulleys since they are known to fail, but it is not common.

This is a 996 recent belt change. Takes a few minutes on a 996 because you do not have to go through a service cover.

Thanks,

I was thinking it was more like a timing belt. My concern was from an experience I had with a 300zx turbo that broke a timing belt at 63,000 miles and it cost me over $4000.

No, the Boxster and 996 does use a rubber belt, but not for the cams as those are driven by chains. On a Boxster think of it a a fan belt with a fancy name.

I just did the poly rib belt took all of 5 min to change out using Loren's instructions on the DIY section. Got the part at the following site.

1x #W1000-84690/W1000-84690 Multi Rib Belt= $37.10

The old belt didnt have but a few cracks anyway, cheap insurance & keep the old for emergency.
