Oil temperature at track event

I took my 2011 Carrera S to its first driver's ed event yesterday. It performed flawlessly except for what I fear was a high oil temperature. By end end of each run the oil temperature was 240 to 245. Water temperature was fine at 175. The outside temperature was in the high 50s. In my old 1972 911T, an oil temperature of 240 was cause for concern and risked engine damage. Can anyone tell me if this temperature is too high for this engine and synthetic oil and whether I need to have it checked out.

That sounds a bit on the high side to me, but I have no knowledge or information about the new engine design. Since the car is under warranty I would have it checked out or at least mentioned to the dealer to see if this is within the design limits or is normal.

Again, not knowing anything about the design, tracking the car heavily may require additional add-ons to deal with this. That might present an issue since the car is under warranty.

That being said, it could be perfectly normal for this car.

Three of us from OVR had experienced oil temps in the 255 - 270 range with air temps in the low/mid 90s at Mid-Ohio. The water temperature was pretty much at 175 for all of us. The water temperature gauge appears not to move much until it is several degrees above 175.

Afterwards all of us went with the 3rd radiator kit and saw improvements in the oil temperatures. On similar days my oil temperature went from 255-260 to 235-240 for a manual transmission. A friend with PDK saw a range change of 260 - 270 down to 245. These were noted at Mid-Ohio as well.

With an oil to water cooler it makes since to me that additional cooling capacity should help with a reduction in oil temperatures. As a final note all of the cars with the 3rd radiator modification were using Mobil 1 0-W40.

Old thread but can anyone share a link on the install of the 3rd rad kit for a 997.2 S? Or can anyone provide part numbers for the same? Curious, does the install require any changes to the front bumper for air flow reasons? Have the same issues of higher oil temps at the track. Using 5W-50 presently. TIA, Best, and Happy Holidays!

The trick we used on the older cars (996 series) was to take a GT3 (mk1) radiator, hoses, and front bumper (or aerokit front bumper with the plug removed).

Someone likely needs to try the same thing on a 997-2 car.
