I have a 77 930 Turbo.

After a drive, I notice the rear bumper getting hotter then it probably should.

Should there be some sort of heat protection on the inside of the bumper or between the exhaust and bumper? I doubt that this is normal.

Any thoughts?

Well they do get hot and radiate massive amounts of heat when you shut the engine off..... hard to say if it's too much on your vehicle over the net. Sorry I can't recall what heat shields are there but I'm sure somebody more helpful will be along shortly.

Really hard to say what is normal or not, I'm sure someone technical can chime in for you. Have you googled with any luck? My car has been sitting for years and just washed it and detailed it recently, but I recall it getting warm after a good run.

Having helped remove and re-install a friend's rear bumper on his 930 several times, I can say there is an aluminum heat shield immediately behind the bumper. It is not exactly thick aluminum and it does rust. So, your's is probably gone.

Although I have an '84 (ROW), it does have a heat shield (but believe the bumper is off a North American spec car. The part number for mine is 930-505-511-00, but you would have to have the bolt holes in the top front edge of the bumper to screw it on (3 holes), which use M6x10 bolts (part number 900-278-024-09) with A6,4 washers (part number N-011-524-7). The heat shield (Porsche OEM) is available through Pelican parts for about $178 US. Not sure if it would fit a '77 Turbo, as it only lists it starting at a '78 option.

Hope it helps.

Been there done that.....nevertheless many years ago I replaced the OEM bumper and installed a fiberglass one, not just for looks but mostly looking forward to cut some weight here and there., from time to time that area got so hot that even the paint was blistering and whatnot. Then I removed the bumper and installed insulating material (the reflective aluminum one) everywhere including bumper inners, the bases of the tail lights and everything else and since then the situation improved a little bit.........still an intense heating producing area.

IIRC, in the early 930, there was only a heat deflector that was flat, above the muffler, to reduce heat from getting up to the reflector. Nothing between the muffler and bumper.
