Some pointers for folks that are looking into buying a 996 Turbo. They are THE best value on the Porsche market right now and, no matter what people tell you... this is the FIRST of the NEW Porsche (water cooled etc) with a GREAT GT1 engine (no known engine defects). The car is well understood in the aftermarket tuner and modification market with a wide array of aftermarket options available at reasonable prices. It is also 1/2 price compared with the 997 versions if which more than 100,000 copies ( all variants) were made worldwide.

There are very few gotcha's with the 996 T assuming it was accident free and maintained correctly. The gotchas's are:

a/ 2nd gear pop-out - modification is available. engine needs to be lowered to repair.

b/ coolant pipes not welded but glued prone to dumping our coolant - engine needs to be lowered to be repaired

c/ check front differential for wear if previous owners have used incorrect tires sizes back / front

d/ Porsche batteries have short life and are hugely expensive - so replace asap is best option

e/ Brake system and clutch servo system uses Pentasin and can leak - modify clutch master/ servo to GT 2 system is the solution

f/ air leaks in turbo system - pressure / leak test the system

So here is a write-up on my hunt for the right car. I started off thinking that I did not want any mods or " enhancements".

My initial criteria were:

1/ 2002 or later

2/ nice exterior color / interior color combo

3/ California car

4/ low mileage

5/ DME read-out acceptable - no over revs that matter

6/ six speed

7/ preferable a 1-owner car

8/ Carfax solid

9/ PPI acceptable.

10/ only meaningful mods (wheels, suspension etc)

11/ full documentation

I looked a several cars during my chase and I ended up purchasing a 2003 T 996 with the following build / options

1/ metallic basalt black / natural brown full leather

2/ Cal car

3/ 23k miles

4/ no overrevs

5/ 6-speed

6/ 3 owners - last owner 6+ years

7/ carfax solid / docs complete

8/ PPI done by Porsche dealer OK

When I was done, I also ended up with additional goodies such as:

1/ Factory Aerokit

2/ 19 inch Sportecs instead of 18 inch Hollows

3/ Fabspeed headers / exhaust

4/ Evoms airbox

5/ Tial A28 turbo/s

6/ Evoms ECUtune to 520 -550 HP

7/ Upgraded sound system to Alpine, including JLA amp / cross-over complete with 2 x12 inch woofer box custom built on parcel shelf, etc

8/ K-40 installed incl Laser scrambler

9/ full ruffled leather interior, headlining Alcantara

10/ complete JIC coil over installation

I am estimating that I paid no more than $2,000.00 for the complete mods / upgrades. I am also calculating that the cost of the mods - when NEW - including the various installation(s) would have been pretty close to $20K. So , I recon I paid 10 cents to the dollar for the mods.

One rule: Take your time... there is ALWAYS another one just around the corner to look at.

Check this out... Just a little tidbit to personalize the car. Ferrari does it so it's OK, I guess.. :-)

That is cool! Where did you get the Porsche crest and how did you adhere it to the paint?

It is actually a magnetic "sticker" that you can peel off at any time without damaging the paint.
