A known problem on early 997's is the main power cable. Does anyone know where/how to check the cable for resistance?

On Rennlist there's a thread on an owner's fried cable.

You first measure the voltage across the

battery terminals.

Then you push a pin (like the one you get when

you buy a new shirt) in the cable at the alternator.

The alternator is on the driver's side on top

of the motor.

Then you measure the voltage from the pin to ground.

You will know if you need a bigger (like the 997-2) alternator

cable if the voltage is less. The voltages should be close to the same

give or take 1/4 of a volt.

If there is a draw on the system from lights, CPU modules etc. won't that knock down the

number of volts that get to the battery?

I do not think so. You test the voltage with the car off.

The only light running is the trunk light and that does

not take much.

Ok I thought this was with car running. I'll give it a shot.

I guess I could test the resistance as well and see what that shows.

Getting to the back of that alternator is nuts, now I see why you use the pin method.

It takes a little bit of time to get the alternator off but,

it takes a lot of time to put it back on the motor.

It is in a real tight area.
