I'm in the process of replacing the right rear wheel bearing. In the process of trying to remove the end of the axle from the wheel bearing housing I have actually ended up pulling the transmission flange right out of the transmission. I was having difficulty in removing the axle end and hit it 4 times to help loosen it up. This had the effect of breaking loose the transmission flange at the transmission. How do I re-install the transmission flange back to the transmission? Currently the inner cv joint is attached to the transmission flange and the axle. The whole axle came off in one piece when I pulled hard on the wheel housing. What is involved in re connecting the transmission flange to the transmission?

Never had the axle out of the 986, but if its like other cars, that stub axle has a circlip near the end of it. You have to push the stub axle back into the diff carefully not to upset the seals, and then force it into place. The trick on other cars is to use the full axle and thanks to the play in the CV joints, you can safely hammer it in like a slide hammer until it pops into place. Again, since I've never done a Boxster, hopefully someone can chime in to verify its the same.

Thanks for the info. I tried it and was able to push the axle back in. It appeared to click right back in with minimal force. Hope it's good to go. Just need a bit of transmission oil as about a liter leaked out. I'll get it topped off tomorrow and take it for a test drive.
