I have a used engine (bought off eBay and advertised as from a '99) with serial number M96/01AT66X66526.

What information can be derived from this serial number?

HI..

M96/01 Tell you it is 1998 or 1999

The 66X denotes 1999 where M96/01 66W would be a 1998

The rest is just s sequence number range 00501>60000

That is about it from the engine number.

That is probably a re-manned engine from Porsche, according to the AT designation.

66X means it is a 1999 model engine (dual row IMS, 5 chain, 3.4L).

I wish I'd taken some pics during the install but the large nut on the intermediate shaft stud gave me a clue that the engine wasn't from a '99.

This is pretty cool and is very new to me. I've been following the forums for 3 + years.

I'm wondering what you have as well. Could you post some pics of your engine??? Bottom side near the wheels, and perhaps top side?

Looks identical to the 3.4 that came in my '99. Except all Torx fasteners and the oil pan has shrouds around the bolt heads while the original engine had all hex heads and the pan bolt heads were proud.

As noted... The "AT" in the engine code indicates a Porsche remanufactured engine. Yours is a 3.4L and appears to have the newer--and non-replaceable--IMSB with 22mm center nut. If that is so, there is no LN Eng retrofit opportunity for this engine per J. Raby. Many MY99/00/01 owners are pleased to find out that they have a newer replacement engine. Personally, I have avoided 996s with the M96/**AT engines because of the non-serviceable IMSB.

Interesting though that we are seeing this larger IMSB on an M96-01... this is the first I've seen or read about!

You can still get an IMS Guardian from flat 6 innovations though, which will warn you of impending IMS bearing failure and avert total disaster...

Also the newer micro encapsulated external torx and torx bolts are standard replacement for the cam covers, scavenge pump, ims flange, case bolts, etc.
