The horn on my 2000 Boxster S has stopped working. I noticed it not working a couple of days ago and then it came back. It's gone again now -- I am on a roadtrip and really need it to work in order to be safe driving in urban traffic (currently in Chicago). The horn itself works based on setting the alarm and hearing a short honk. Fuse is good. I've searched, and it doesn't seem like my particular problem comes up very often on the forums. Please help if you can - I have a small metric toolset and can borrow specialty tools.

:welcome:

The alarm horn is separate from the vehicle horns - they are not connected.

If you did a search you should have seen that the stock horns are poor and prone to failure. If the fuses are good then it is likely you have two bad horns.

If you have small hands you can reach up under the front bumper (right center) to replace or test the two horns.

Some of the earlier years (like yours) developed a problem with the horn contact ring in the steering column, causing intermittent problems (sometimes the horn won’t blow, other times it blows all by itself) or even total failure of the horns. Problem can usually be fixed by cleaning the contact ring and the contact itself, but occasionally the parts need to be replaced. Fortunately, they are not very expensive.
