Hello, I got another top from an 04 car and have fitted it to my 00 car. There is a strap which at the moment is stuck onto some velcro underneath the roof frame and doesnt seem to be doing anything. My question is what is this and where should it go please? The roof seems to operate fine but could do with some adjustment to straighten it up a little so the gap to the clamshell is even on both sides - any advice on this?

Also when retracting the roof if I don't put the clip back in it catches on the plexiglass screen between the roll over hoops and my old one didn't do this so any advice on what the strap is for and any adjustments required would be appreciated.

Thanks

Basically the strap is used to keep the glass top out of the way when the top is in the service position. With the top in the service position pull the strap around the top and put the loop around the tab in the frame of the roof. The tab is the part that fits into the windshield frame when the roof is fully closed.

I think the 2003 and 2004 owners manual shows the use of the strap.

jthailer is right on the money with his explanation regarding the velcro strap.

The reason that your latch just hits the top of the plexiglass screen when you are retracting the top is because the base of the frame (on both the left and the right side) is not pulled back far enough before you tightened the three bolts on each side.

You can loosen the three bolts on each side, then have someone pull the frame back (it will only move a few millimeters at most) while you tighten one of the three bolts on that side. Repeat the procedure for the other side, and then tighten the other two bolts on each side. That should allow your latch to just clear the top of the plexiglass window by a hair.

The gap between the clamshell and the rear of the top should also be improved by the above procedure.

If the gap still needs a little more adjustment, check the tension "ropes" that run on each side from under the rear main bow down to their anchoring point on the opposite (lower) side of the tension rope. You can adjust the amount of tension that pulls on the rear main bow (as the latch at the windshield pulls in the opposite direction as it is snapped shut) by means of the 14mm adjusting bolt that sits just outboard of the carpeted cover over the engine, down toward the direction of the drain holes.

Regards, Maurice.
