P0430 Code

Question,

I've got this code (P0430) on my 2001 Boxster S, just turned 75,000 miles yesterday.

I've read through lots of earlier posts, so I'm clear on what the code is is. What I don't know, or am confused on is this; Bank 2 = Driver's Side (USA), Correct? Then which cat is faulty? The Exhaust Manifold Cat, (does the '02 have these) or the Other Cat?

What do they mean by "Before starter Catalytic convertor", "After Starter Catalytic convertor"?

It seems reasonable that 02 sensors at 75000 might need to be changed. Looking at the PET parts listing and diagram has me confused. :help:

As for the O2 sensors, they can be tested by themselves to make sure they are working. If they are good, or after you replace any faulty ones, clear all codes and road test the car for a prolonged period. If the P0430 code returns, your cat is toast...........

I have the exact same code on my 01 Boxster with 86K miles. The dealer told me to replace both cats at a cost of $4.5k OUCH! I don't live in California, so I've been debating on getting an aftermarket catalytic converter. I believe the converter in the code refers to the cat just before the muffler.

Thanks for the replies. No emissions here in Montana either, so its not a crisis at this point. The car is running like a champion. I'm going to wait and see if anything else pops up. I was unsure which cat the code was referring to. If it is the after cat I might see what a used one goes for.

I'd rather be saving for a new pending clutch and IMS bearing upgrade than a silly cat!

I just realized I gave some bad advice. I'm adding this post to clarify.

They catalytic converter you need to replace is the one on the header. If you look at the exhaust diagram for the 2000+ Boxsters you'll see that the cat on the header has O2 sensors on each side of it. The cat next to the muffler is not monitored. Surprisingly enough the Porsche header is cheaper than the Porsche catalytic converter next to the muffler.

I have the same fault code P0430 on bank 2, something about efficiency. Car is an 01 with 70k miles.

My mechanic replaced the pre cat oxygen sensors 8 months ago when this fault code came up first. Now they are saying to replace the post cat O2 sensor at a cost of about $200 ($120 for the part + half and hour labor).

Should I do that or just replace the pre cats with used ones?

Do you know if the engine runs differently when the CE light is on? Does the computer change anything about the fuel mixture, or anything else?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

P0430 (catalytic converter conversion too low bank 2 = cyl. 3 - 6) refers to the cat. condition and not to the sensors.

The engine runs on a pre - programmed limping home system that ignore the actual values if the MIL is on.
