02 Climate Control Freakout (Not LCD Bleed) Question....

Ok, I need some advice. My climate control is now on the fritz. Never had a problem, but now it has a few segments missing from the temperature (which when you drop or raise the temp, the segments that were missing come back on and new ones go out, "73"a shows great "71 missing the "7", and 70 missing a few in the zero). I believe that maybe this was the LCD, so not too big of a deal although I'm not sure why them go on and off.

The bigger issue that I'm concerned about is when changing the temperature down the climate control display goes 73,72,71,70,69,68,86,85,84,83...62..Lo

When raising it up it goes 79,80,61,62,63...Hi.

The temperature works as it should even though the display is not reading right, for ex I will put it on 67 and it will show 85 but be full AC blast as it should.

I been in talks with modulemaster services (that sell the LCD rebuild), and they advised I should ask on the forums to see if anyone else might have had the same problem as they couldn't guarantee it was an LCD issue. They seemed friendly, and said they would do a rebuild and if it didn't work I would only be out Postage each way however I want to make sure this is a LCD issue and not a software problem before shelling out over $100.

I've never had a problem before the other night when it did get some mist on the front of the unit (not much and was wiped up promptly). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TCS85, Not sure if you have replaced the headunit with any non-OEM replacement , however I would suggest you remove headunit and get to ATC connectors and see if any of them are loose. I have never experienced the problem as you describe it, but when I installed a Nav System to replace my stock head-unit I remmber having some problems with getting the connectors to seat and lock in the new headunit. The ATC connectors are of the same design and again possibly could have worked loose.

Okay, I've got a video of the problem now for all to see what I'm talking about. I spoke with the guys over at modulemaster.com and they see pretty helpful so I'm going to send the unit in tomorrow to see if can be repaired. They said that test fixture for the module so they can diagnose whether the problem is internal, screen, or elsewhere in the car. So we will see. I figure someone else is bound to have the same issue in the future so I'll keep posting for other to dig and resolve their future headaches, lol.

If that were my 99 996 I would first try re-soldering or replacing the LEDs (since I replaced all of mine with blue). If that didn't work I would try the LCD rebuild. Last ditch effort would be to phone up a dismantler and get a replacement control unit. Of course, it might be most economical to get a second hand unit straight away (assuming the LCD rebuild doesn't work).

I would bet that the software is contained within the unit itself and not externally (for example it just reads from DME, doesn't actually contain any data). Also just an observation that the 6 you are seeing is probably an 8, but it is just missing the bars that make the 6 an 8... which might lead more towards a corrupt LCD or micro controller on the A/C PCB than anything.

Okay, we have an update. I sent the module over to modulemaster, and they performed the rebuild on the unit. The problem was the screen, as the new LCD replacement fixed the display issues like a charm. The unit looks great, although for some reason now I do have some new problems with the functioning of the module now. The people at modulemaster have been great so far in helping troubleshoot the issues, and we are working to find the problem right now. I will give another update when available, and hopefully it will be a simple fix. If we can't find any solutions, I will post some more videos and see if anyone can help with the new problem.

BUT anyone having a problem like this, these LCD screens apparently can do some really tricky things when they go on the fritz, and the LCD repair looks great.

Does anyone know if new Climate Controls have any relearning procedures?

Okay, the final word on the issue. The problem all along did turn out to be the module. I sent the module to modulemaster.com and they performed a rebuild, and it came back as good as new. As far as the problem above, I took off the interior sensor, cleaned it really good with 99%+ alcohol & Qtips, cleaned all of the electrical connectors, made sure my vents were plugged during testing (since my air vent ducts are at the shop being painted), and reset the battery again. So far everything is working 100% (knock on wood) and the module looks fantastic.

I strongly recommend using these guys. They have fast turn around and very helpful. I never waiting on hold for any reason, and the tech was great for troubleshooting. It's nice to actually have people stand by their work, which seems to be becoming rare. Best of all it comes with a 5yr warranty on the work, so if it does stop working properly then they take care of it.

If you have any module issues send it to them, they do more than just the LCD repair on the rebuild and test afterwards to ensure function is 100%. Hopefully this thread will come in useful for others in the future who might experience the same problem.

Share the frustrations troubleshooting problems, and it makes it so much easier for the next guy.
