On my 04 Cayenne S Transmission goes from D mode to manual by itself. It does this generally at slow speeds and does not do it all the time. Was wondering if this is just some kind of switch or sensor that has gone bad.

Do you have Tiptronic?

is this a serious question? What kind of manual transmission has D?

Tiptronic's have both an automatic model and a manual shift mode.

willrwilli,

I have been trying to understand a problem I have which is a very noisy selection in manual mode. I also have intermittent problems with selecting gears in manual. I discovered that there are two electromagnets that I assume are designed to hold the lever in auto or manual. They are under the shift mechanism. This may be a good place to start looking....

Thanks I also heard something about a micro switch (don't know if that is a different name for the magnets you described) how easy are these to replace? And FYI it does have tiptronic.

The microswitch is in the same general area as the two electromagnets. The problem is that although I have been around cars and engines for 35 years, this thing is so sophisticated that I can only guess at the functions of components without a manual (which I dont have). Hope I am not sending you on a wild goose chase....There are some very smart and knowledgable people on this board and I am sure someone will chime in sooner or later

Since you have TipTronic - it's possible you're doing what I did at first.. which was - I tended to rest my hands on the two spokes on the wheel with my thumbs around the rim. Turns out doing that often let my clumsy hand tap the TipTronic button on the spoke - which instantly puts it in manual mode and downshifted the transmission one gear. Surprised me and took a bit to figure out what I was doing. Hands are now in proper 10-2 positions on the rim.

Man that makes alot of sense. I will be more mindful of this and I think I should be ok. Until I read your post I had an appointment at the dealer to get this checked out. I would have hated to be charged $120.00 to be told the same thing from them. I was a little suspicious because the dealer seemed to act like this was not a very common issue.

I've accidentally hit the steering wheel buttons on mine and bumped it into manual a few times too. It generally happens at lower speeds when making large movements with the wheel.
