My 2002 996 rear spoiler was not going up/down all the way on the left side. I didn't get a light on the dash but noticed the left side not retracted all the way. I pulled it apart and found the left side plastic lifting tube(for lack of actual name) causing the problem. I was actually able to repair it. I also had to reposition the metal cable sheath which led me to taking the cover off the plastic box with the two racks inside. I tried to set the racks in the exact position relative to each other, however I did not know the proper position relative to the proximity switch, etc.. So now I can manually lower the arms, then attach the motor and hit the up switch. the arms will raise, then not lower , and I will get the malfunction light on the dash. I think I am close, but for sure , no cigar. Does anyone have knowledge of the proper settings of these components?

Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it, it helps with the overall details. I am actually in it deeper that that information shows, since I am into the "rack box" under the drive motor. I had it running from down to up last night. I need to research to see what the proximity switch actually hits on the rack to make the motor reverse and take the spoiler back down. I think my racks are aligned but I may be a tooth off, one way or another.

Looking into this further, it appears that the root cause of my issues is that one of the two micro switches which act as limit switches has the very small actuator tab broken off. Therefore it is not seeing the limit at the end of the rack's travel. Since I can't get the switch from Porsche, I will try to find one elsewhere. It is made into the wiring harness, so I will have to splice another one in.

Just to close the loop, I was able to find a used assembly with the switches included. I used one of the switches and put the entire assembly back together. It works great. If anyone gets into one of these and needs advice, just get in touch with me, I can help them through it.

I have similar problem. Spoiler light is on at all time. Whenever it goes up or down, it makes the " click, click ..." sound until 3 min or so.

I suspect that it was the limit switch sensor problem, but not sure where it is and part number? Do I have to buy the whole harness? OR just replace the switches?

It does go up or down. My car is a 1999 C4 cab.

You may be hearing the gears stripping out. Does it go up and down or just click? What year car? 270-927-7235 to discuss.

My spoiler has a rubbing sound while it goes up/down. I was able to spray some lubricant into the "rack box" and was able to cut down the rubbing sound, but now it's coming back. I was thinking about taking the "rack box" apart and adding some type of grease to the gears. Since you've had the box open, would you think this is a good idea? Anything to watch out for when I open the box?

Guys, I have a complete rear spoiler from my 2001 Carrera that includes the motor and harnes that I would be willing to sell if anyone needs it. I upgraded to a fixed spoiler GT2 style and no longer need it. FYI

David When you unbolt the assembly from the underneath of the spoiler you will need to pull the motor/gearbox out also. You will probalby need to pull the connector pins out where the actuator attaches to the actual spoiler(don't drop the pins or clips).Just make sure that you keep the plastic gears straight (this might even be your problem). When you get down to just the box, it just clips together. It helps to have another set of hands close buy. The actuator cable rides in a rigid tube. The ends of the tubes have a bell of sorts that fits in a slot in the plastic assembly, so that when it all snaps together it hold the rigid tube securely. When you open the plastic box you will see the rack/pinion which has some silicone looking grease in it. You will also see the two micro switches and how they work. Be careful, and be patient. Feel free to call me if you want to discuss. The price is around $1400 for the assmebly so if you can figure it out it would be good!! I have some spare parts if you find out what you need, we could probably work something out. RB

That's good information! After a few cycles, my spoiler isn't making any further grumbling/squeaking sounds. But I think just spraying into a box is just a temporary fix and I'll probably open of the rack and pinion box and grease it up and inspect the parts.

However, my 1998 Boxster (170k miles) now belongs to my step son. All his money goes to School....and other things, so there is not much $$ available for Boxster repairs. One of his spoiler pistons does not operate, so we've removed the fuse and don't use it. I may take the assembly out of the car and take it apart and look and see what actually failed. Perhaps there is a common part or two that we can use to get his spoiler up and running.

I'll post with details if I get a chance to get into this.

I seem to have the same problem with my 2001 c4 cab. the rear spoiler doesnt rise, the light on the dash is on, and one side of the decklid is loose.

I checked it out today and on the right rod there seems to be cables ripping out of the plastic casing. what could this be?

on the left rod there is a small metal pin pushing out the bottom of the left rod. it broke through the bottom of the plastic.

any help would be great as this is a huge headache. porsche is throwing all kinds of expensive numbers at me too.

May I ask if anyone have know where the limit switch located? After changing the whole spoiler assembly, problem solved for a few weeks and back again.

Found them. There are part number V4NCS laser marked on them and there are a longer PN with was not clear, I can only read V4Nxxxx597.
