So I have just completed replacing the Transmission Oil and filter.

I also changed the oil and I was expecting a similar quantity drain 8-9 qts.

However, I only saw about 4 quarts of ATF drain.

I have Bentley Manual and another manual and both indicate I am expected to replace ~ 9.5 qts of transmission oil. I bought 8 qts as I've read some see less.

I was only able to put in just under 4 quarts.

Did I miss a step?

I suppose that Bentley meant the full ATF capacity inclusive torque converter, after rebuild. The service capacity is much less. The Tiptronic fill procedure is: gearbox 40° Celsius, engine off, filling to overflow the filler, engine idling and refill to overflow the filler..

Per Bentley, Page 37-4:

Fluid change quantity: 3.5 liters/3.7 US qt.

Transmission fill quantity (including torque converter): 9 liters/9.5 US qts.

I'd read that in my Bentley manual as well, and was a bit unsure of how many quarts I needed to get. It's not really a "change" if it's only 1/3 of the fluid, is it? Does changing 3.5L meet the service requirements?

Pelican Parts website recommended using Esso LT 71141 or Pentosin ATF-1 instead of Porsche fluid, but also said not to mix types. How do I know what's in there already? Can these both safely be mixed with original OEM fluid?

'89k miles on my '04 986S and I know I'm due for an ATF change.

Edit: hey, found a TSB here listing approved oils, and verified that both Esso LT 71141 and Pentosin ATF-1 are approved by Porsche for 986 ATF, and can be mixed.
