Interior scratches

As I’m sure almost all of you have experience, my plastic trim surrounding the hook and trunk release is very scratched. This weekend I was taking a closer look and notices that there is a kind of paint on the plastic that is wearing off. Sense my interior is black I figured I’d try and remove the paint leaving behind the black plastic. I did this with a Scotch Brite pad, lots of time, and very sore fingers.

My questions is… Would this work on the center console as well? It’s very scratched and beat up and I’d much rather have the look of the black plastic then the scratched up black rubbery paint. I know I could buy a replacement console but the cost of a new one verses a few Scotch Brite pads and an afternoon’s time is hard to beat.

If you're super-ambitious, you could try re-doing the soft-touch rubbery paint:

This material is showing up on more and more cars lately, so somebody is going to have to figure out a fix for it.
